Chapter Fourteen

Bridge

That light feeling from waking up with Emma didn’t last. No sooner did I hear her turn on the faucet to brush her teeth, than my phone buzzed on the nightstand. Blearily I glanced at the bedside clock. It was barely six-thirty.

I snatched it up quickly. “This is Edgerton.”

“Mr. Edgerton, this is Sister Mary Luce from St. Catherine’s Academy. This is about your sister.”

People always acted as if panic was hot. For me, it was icy and cold.

Brain already in speed mode, I growled, “What’s happened?”

“I’m sorry to have to say this, but Darcy broke curfew last night. We discovered she was missing this morning.”

My fucking sister. “Right. I’ll be there in a few hours.”

“Thank you Mr. Edgerton.” She sniffed the sniff of the indignant. I knew that sound of exasperation well. It was the sound you heard anywhere near Darcy.

I wished I could explain the feeling, the worry, the swirling panic, the way it gripped my gut and twisted it, and those little minions with pointy pitchforks that would stab at intermittent times. Off campus. For the love of Christ. Anything could have happened to her. Of all the reckless behavior. She knew better. Fury coursed through my veins. I couldn't show that though. I needed to stay calm. I couldn't let Emma see me like this.

"Is something wrong?"

Her soft question from the door brought me out of my reverie. I swallowed hard. "I, uh—" I cleared my throat. I was already jumping out of bed. "There's an emergency."

Emma strode over quickly, which dislodged her tank top, exposing a full breast with cinnamon-tipped nipples. I swallowed hard and turned around immediately.

"There's something I have to take care of. Family thing."

"Let me come. I can help."

I shook my head as I shoved on my boxers. "No, I don't need your help." I could hear her stomping around to stand in front of me before I could grab the rest of my clothes and jump to the shower.

I glowered down at her. It was my full-on glower face. It usually worked wonders to get people out of my way, but it didn’t work with her.

"We just had a whole moment, you know, where I had a bad dream, I talked to you about it. You were supportive. And while we're not in a real relationship, we are family, aren't we?"

My mouth was dry. And there was stinging somewhere in the region of the upper part of my nose. What the fuck was that? I nodded slowly. "Yes, but I have to do this."

"Yes, I understand that. I'm not saying that you don't. If something's wrong with your mum, you have to go. So, let me help you. In case you haven't realized, you have a crisis manager here. So you go and take a shower, and while you’re doing that, I'll go turn the coffee maker on and fix something to eat, because you need to eat before you go deal with whatever it is. Then I'll have a shower, and I will come with you.
